Chris Pickering EDC 430 Observe/Reflect #6 Dr. Fogleman ObservationsDate: November 30, 2011Time: 7:30-11:15Today was probably about my tenth time visiting Narragansett High School. I am starting to get much more comfortable and am really starting to get to know the students. Today was a very exciting day to observe. It started off with Mr. Zabel’s advisory. During advisory the kids bowled in the classroom. They set up these little bowling pins and used a squishy ball to bowl. They seemed to really enjoy themselves and they were able to do it in a controlled, somewhat quiet manner. This kept them busy the entire advisory period. After advisory was the ecology class. Ecology was making biospheres in 5 gallon plastic jars. This was so cool! They would put a little pond muck in the bottom of the jar. They would then put aquarium stones on the bottom and then fill the jar with water, plants, and a few fish and snails. Everything they did had to be recorded, measured, and weighed so they had records of everything. I was able to walk around the room and ask questions as to why they would put a certain amount of plant in or how many fish they were using. It was a great way for me to learn the kids and how they think.
This period flew by and then Mr. Zabel had a free period so I took off. ReflectionThis was one of my favorite days that I have observed yet. This was an awesome way for me to see an inquiry based activity be executed. The student had to completely design the procedure themselves. It was very exciting to see the different ways that the students thought. I also had an opportunity to walk around and ask questions in a less formal environment. Overall, this was an awesome day and I look forward to next semester more and more each day! Class Topic: Biospheres Grade: 10 and 11 Observed By: Chris Pickering
